CONSTRUCTION- Transferring and editing Foley sounds onto Final Cut Pro 10

Transferring and editing Foley sounds onto Final Cut Pro 10

This is fnal Cut Pro 10 . Here I have edted the foley sounds nto the film. Firstly, the long green track is the sound track i then put below it two foley sounds. I have to ensure the foley sounds are in sync with the shot to make it look beleivable. Additionally, the foley sound has to blend into the soundtrack well. For example, if there is a loud part on the soundtrsck the foley sound will have to be louder to ensure that it is heard and vice versa with the soundttrack being quiet. These were a few factors i had to constantly consider.

This image shows the black line in the green box being moved down to 13db. This was done to make the sound effect of footsteps more quiet as the victim was walkng from a long shot angle with the shot that this foley sound is synched with. Therefore, the decibels would have to be lowered in order for the shot to look realistic.

This image shows the layering of foley sounds. In certain shots mroe than one foley sound was required. For example for the London scenes had to overlay a variety of different sounds due to there being so many different sound effects that would be happening in London at one time. For example, the image above shows me overlaying the sound effects as there would have to be 'wind' /people talking' 'traffic' /vehicles' driving past 'sirens' all at the same time. It is important all these sound are used to make the opeining realistic and set a standard for the rest of the supposed film.

CONSTRUCTION- Downloading specific Foley Sounds

Downloading specific Foley Sounds

I got most of my Foley sounds from youtube, due to to that website having the largest range of sound effects that i could find. For example, the sound effect of an escalator i could only find on youtube. I then downloaded the youtube clip to my memory stick.

I also got sounds from sound bible too. However, these sounds were more basic and i could only find a limited amount of sounds from there for example, cop siren noise.

The sounds i choose had to be specific towards the thriller opening and had to be realistic. For example, footsteps. Both main characters in the thriller opening were walking on concrete in London. therefore I therefore i had to find not only footsteps but footsteps that sounded like they were walking on concrete. This was where youtube was useful as there is a large range of sound effects available on there that covered 'footsteps on concrete.'

Additionally, the vehicle the assassin drove was a mini cooper. Therefore i had to find and research what the engine of a mini-cooper sounded like and on youtube and find the correct sound effect. It was important i used the sound of the engine of a mini cooper as otherwise it would not be realistic.

This was me picking a sound effect of the mini cooper engine sound effect on youtube.

This is me downoading and converting that sound effect on youtube mp3 converter

This is me downloading music from sound bible for example- the sound of the car beeping.

CONSTRUCTION- Foley Sounds

Foley Sounds

We have each done a individual edit. I have looked through the video considering that a lot of the sound will be taken out , as it will have put out and then be edited in to make it sound clearer louder and more professional. This would be by adding the foley sounds in. this is a list of some of the foley sounds that we will edit into our final group edit.

-Gun shot x2
-Cars moving on the road.
-Finger pressing on car key button- clicking noise.
-Phone ringtone- one from iphone- the assassin would have a basic ringtone as he wants to be portrayed as serious and professional otherwise it would kill the tension.
-Doors closing
- Trains Moving
- TV noise flicking through channels.
- People speaking - background noise
- Assassin voice
- victims voice
- Assassins sons voice
- Rucksack Zipping up
- Zipping up the coat.
-Clatter of guns going into rucksack.
- Escalators the noise.
- Footsteps- on carpet and on a harder floor Eg- concrete.
- Hand brake
- the revs on the car
- the exhaust
-Gears/ throttle- accelerating.
- Cars moving across the road- friction
- Clicking on the laptop
- keyboard
- Camera clicking when capturing a image.
- Chair creaking when Victims sits into it.
- Putting phone onto desk.
- a Door opening/closing
- Doors automatically opening.

Social CLass- Mock Exam- Merlin

MOCK EXAM- SOCIAL CLASS

Within social class, Merlin represents the stereotype of Working class. In this scene Merlin resembles his this stereotype through his clothing. He is introduced as  wearing a ragged scarf and baggy clothing which emphasizes the suggestions that they are too big for him and that he cannot get any other clothes that would fit him which suggests that he is working class. Especially due to the fact that working class people are stereotyped as not having much money and are not respected. This shows him to not having much power as he wears  ragged clothing and therefore has no money and so cannot have an powerful influence on society  as he has no money to do that with. This represents him as powerless as money gives you power. This therefore reinforces the stereotype of working class as to being people with no money resulting in no influential power.  Additionally, he reinforces the stereotype of working class through consistently throughout the scene being shot form an high angle. For example, when Merlin  falls to the floor a number of times when Arthur tries to attack him. This high angle shot defuses any sense of power or status form him as the camera is looking down on him which emasculates him, making him appear weak and powerless. Moreover, he is not defending himself but trying to get away from Arthur which also shows his weakness.  This therefore reinforces the stereotype of working class as he is representing this class as to being people who are weak and incompetent when it comes to defending themselves. However he does challenge the stereotype of working class as when Arthur says “don’t run away” the camera is focused on a close up shot of Merlin and then Arthur and his men are in the background slightly out of focused. This makes Arthur and his men appear insignificant and therefore low status opposed to Merlin who has prominence and in focus reinforcing him as to having prominence in the shot which gives him power. This challenges the stereotype of working class as they are typically represented as to being weak whereas Merlin represents them as being in power through the use of being most prominent in a shot. Additionally, he motivates the cut when he uses his magic to make Arthurs weapon come out of his hand and become tangled within a hoop. The close up shot of Merlin eye shows the magic and how that influences the shot to be cut to Arthurs weapon being taken out of his hand. This represents Merlin to having power, and so therefore challenges the typical powerless stereotype of working class and how they can still be represented as with power.

The character Arthur is stereotyped as Upper class. He reinforces this stereotype through mise en scene. Arthur wears silver clothing. The colour silver symbolizes wealth which highlights the suggestion that he is upper class as they are stereotyped as having lots of money and showing it through their clothing. Silver is expensive too which shows that his clothing is expensive and so he would need to be rich and so forth upper class to afford it. His silver creates the suggestion that he is someone of  a high status as silver was worn but royalty in which Arthur is. His silver armour makes him appear intimidating opposed to Merlin who had no body armour on,  as it gives  Arthur the competitive advantage. This makes him appear powerful and in control which reinforces the stereotype of upper class that are symbolized as being powerful and high status. Through the use of sound he reinforces this type of upper class. This is shown through the use of sound that was added in and emphasized to appear louder on Arthur’s weapon swinging through the air. It created a sharp whipping noise which sounds powerful and as the sound is quick it reflects Arthurs skill with the weapon. The use of making the sound louder on the weapon gives it power and as Arthur is holding this powerful weapon it gives him power too. This reinforces the stereotype of upper class as they are represented as being powerful and educated and trained in what they do.  In addition, there are   fast pace cuts throughout the action scene when Arthur attempts to attack Merlin. These fast cuts reflect Arthurs quick retaliation skills to Merlin’s defences emphasizing his confidence and power. This reinforces the stereotype of upper class. Arthur is represented from a low angle shot when he has the weapon in his hand. This makes him appear intimidating as a low angle shot makes a person look taller, hence the intimidation. Also as he is looking down on someone suggest he is higher status and more powerful which reinforces the stereotype of powerful, dominant, upper class people.

Extended Evaluation of my Individual Edit.

Match on Action
I used a vareity of techniques within my editing. For example match on action i used alot in my edit. For example on of my match on action would be when It shows the assasin entering a door from a mid still shot and then swithces to the next frama qucily to show the door opening from inside the room. It is clear ot see the gap between the door and the room in both shots is the same. This ensures then that when i play both shtos together it will smoothly show the door opening within two shots that have been edited together. For example.

I also used match on action  when the assasn was shutting his house door i showed a mid shot of him walking through his door and stepping outdide about to fully close it then i edit in a long shot which show the house and it shows the door closing, This is an example of this type of match on action.

 Another Match on Action.

(mid shot) another frame showing assasin about to make contact with the door handle.

Hand on the door knob- close up shot.

Match on Action opening a laptop

\Match on action was a challenge to perfrct and to ensure it looked good as the framaes need to sync with one another effortlesly. I edited  a close up shot of our assasins face as he slwoly turns to look intot he camera. Here i have previouswly edited this shot with the one before and am playing it back to check that it links to the prevous shot through continuity. For example, the lighting is the same, the assasin looks the same and that the shot type has changed to show vercititly.

Rendering was a disadvantage with my edit as i had to  render every individual clip due to my group using a sd card opposed ot a tape. Rendering allows the clips to sync witht he music and to play in good quality on the software on the apple computers called 'Final Cut Pro' Howevr as the dealine for editing was on friday the renedring was meaning i had to stay at school each night until late to make enough progress to ensure i would meet the deadline. Once i hadfinished my film i had to colourgrade it. Due to the rendering taking up most of my time i had to quicly colour grade as i was coming up to my deadline. Unfortunley with the colour grading i had to rush it and alot fo the clips came out too blue. Howveer, alot of the clips did come out sucessfully and did look like a thriller colourgraded film would appear. The colour grading had to be dark, dull and slightly blue. From researching into other thrillers i relaized this and applied it to my own edit.

I also used a few transitions such as speeding up some footage. For exmaple when the assasin is driivng intot Lonodn i sped up the images of people walking in Lonodn to symbolize the speed of the car and how quickly he was travelling into London. I also had to slow down some footage so that it linked in with the match on action. For example, when the assasin hand goes on top of the ringing phone it then switches to the next clip and the assasin picks the phone up to quicky. Moreover, the speed of his hand in the first clip did not match the speed of his hand in the second therefre i had to slwo the scond clip down to ensure that i synced.

To improve my individual edit i would spend more time on the colour grading ensuiring every clip looked similar in colour. I would also add some music to see what the music will look like with the footage. This would be beneficial as in my final group edit we will have to use music so it owuld be sueful to knwo what sort of music matches the one on the film.

However, i edited my work profesionally using rule of thirds, speeding up , slowing down, colour grading appropratly for most images, match on action and ensuring the story lined was clear and conssitent through each shot. And additonally, i ensured there was constiency and continuty through all the shots too.

Schedule for days shooting in London, Alex house and surrey and the preparation we made for it.

We had access to a video camera, Tri-pod, props and actors for saturday 26th and sunday 27th of January. Therefore we had a limited amount of time to ensure we maintained on schedule, achieved continutiy within our filming and to ensure we did not run out of day light as it got dark at 4.30.

Saturday
We went to Alex's house at 10.30am. We filmed the beggining scene with the Assassin begin informed of his next mission and what he will be required to do and the consequences if he didn't. we then filmed the family scene later on in the night as our actors were scheduled to arrive later at night. However a problem we faced was that as it go dark the film did not show continuity and consistency. Therefore, we used white lights to ensure it still looked like it was at night. Alex had also suggested that once we colour grade it. it will be unnoticeable. We also filmed at a car park that day and filmed the assassin driving on the road. We finished filming that day 7pm.

Sunday
We got up and got ready at 6.50Am. We ensured we were up early so that we had a long enough day of filming to give us enough to to also get to London and Surrey too.. As we had two locations to get two that were forty minutes form each-other. We prepared by knowing the locations within Canary Wolf that we were going too. For example Alex and Ellie went up to London Previously to get test shots and i took some test shots too so that we were aware of where we filming and how good the locations looked on camera. When we got London we started by Filming our victim. We had our Assassin actor arrive in London later on in the day at 1pm- as we did not need him until we had finished filming our victim and there would not of been any point in having our actor to be waiting around. We looked over our storyboard before filming so that we fully understood what we were filming this day, and how much time on average we should spend on each shot , depending on the length of it. We filmed our victim coming into Canary Wolf and then we had our Assassin Follow him to the Porsche garagce where the victim worked. The porsche garage was in surrey so we took a 40 minute train to surrey, quickly before the daylight went as we were aware that if it got dark our film would not be consistent and would not have continuity. Once we finished filming in surrey it was dark and so we used the white lights in the porsche garage and in the offices so that the audience could not tell that it had got dark. We then took a train abck to London and from London went home and arrived at home by 9pm.
